This PDF list of vegan and vegetarian restaurants is updated pretty regularly, and I've been slowly eating my way through it since moving here in March: http://students.washington.edu/careuw/feb06guide.pdf

Some favorites are:
Wayward Cafe: when you can't stand another minute without a faux Philly cheese steak
Globe Cafe: when you need your fix of collard greens and red beans
Healthy Hedon: Jamaican inspired, good place for a date
Bamboo Garden: vegan, kosher, Chinese and known for their faux meat dishes; good for groups if you call ahead
Araya: tasty Thai, all vegan (some folks find their sauces generally too sweet, but I like it there)
Mighty O doughnuts: need I say more???

on the airplane?

Are vegan options edible on the airplane? They only decent vegan food I've ever had on the airplane was when I went to Israel. El Al has amazing vegan food! I've never actually been excited to eat airplane food before I flew on El Al.

I had vegan ravioli, and rice dream, and vegan pudding from Zen Soy, and more that I can't remember.

I usually bring my own food on the airplane, but wanted to know if anyone else has tried any of the vegan options on the airplane?

Honolulu,HI

I just came back from Honolulu and had so much fun eating there!

The first place I went to was called Ruffage Natural Foods. I saw it mentioned in VegNews Magazine. They have an avocado sandwich that has avocado, shredded carrots, sprouts, tomato, and mustard on it. Also, a vegan burger with all the same stuff as the avocado sandwich plus a vegan burger. Both sandwiches come on whole grain vegan bread. Be careful though if you're vegan/lactose intolerant/ lacto-ovo-you have to specify no mayo on the sandwiches. I almost ended up with some on mine the first time I went there!

They also make smoothies and are nice about leaving out the honey and/or using soy milk instead of real milk.

Ruffage is on Kuhio Avenue. I don't remember the address, but if anyone is interested I think you can look it up online, or ask me, and I'll see if I still have their business card. They also open early (9am) and close early (6pm, last order at 5:45pm)

Down to Earth is the local health food store that also has amazing take out options. Everything that is vegan is clearly labeled as such. If you're going to Honolulu, don't miss out on Down to Earth! I believe they also have stores on the other islands(not sure). It's on King Street next to the community center, near the university.

Ala Moana mall has fresh spring rolls that you can have made with tofu instead of shrimp(not sure if the sauce that comes on the side is vegan or not, I didn't ask).

Also at the mall and most of the convenient stores(they're called ABC stores. they're everywhere. All you have to do is turn your head, and you'll see one), have great vegan Japanese food. The rice cakes(which you can also find in Ala Moana mall) are good, very filling, and chewy so be careful you don't choke on them! I also found some buckwheat noddles. The ABC store near Waikiki had a number of different kinds of Japanese food. I forget what they're called, but the things with rice inside and have a brown, spongey(made of tofu?) wrapper on the outside are vegan and good. Most of the ABC stores also sell fresh fruit.

Pyramids is an Egyptian restaurant that I didn't get to go to, but I heard has some of your typical vegan options-hummus, grape leaves(as long as there's no meat in them or cheese on top),etc.

And of course there's shaved ice!! Although, I'd stay away from any of the red flavors(cherry, strawberry, etc) because carmine is used as a red food dye sometimes, bleh.

Hey all,

I'm going on a business trip to Missoula, Montana next week, and was hoping someone had some info for me about where I can eat.

FYI, I try to eat as close to vegan as possible, but will eat some ovo-lacto if needs be.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Go to http://city.ask.com
Type VEGAN in the category and the City in Location.

It will give you as many hits as it can with that word, some results have websites. I'd say 80% of the returns are helpful the other stuff is garbage. It will also list grocery stores and show a map for every result.

Happy hunting!

I'm in New Orleans for a conference. Being both vegan and allergic to wheat, I wasn't looking forward to trying to eat on this trip. The first meal, however, went quite well. Though we intended to go to the Kosher Creole Kitchen (found here http://www.frenchquarter.com/directory.php?search=vegetarian ), it is sadly no longer there. A man who sweeping the street told us that a lot of places that physically survived Katrina haven't made it through the rising rents and reduced tourism. He also had no suggestions on veggie friendly places to go. We wandered back past a place that had smelled really good the first time we walked by, but there was nothing veggie on the menu and it was pretty pricey, so we wandered on. Outside the Alpine restaurant ( http://www.thealpinebistro.com/ ), we were all but accosted on the street by their street hawker, who insisted we wouldn't be disappointed if we decided to have dinner there. He was right! While there were only two veggie options on the menu, and one of them was pasta alfredo, there was absolutely nothing bad to say about my cajun stir fried veggies. My coworker and her partner enjoyed the various sea creatures they had.

I'll try to remember to update as I go, and would appreciate other suggestions that are walking distance from the French Quarter. I think I've got a good list to start with at http://pakupaku.info/neworleans/eatingnola.shtml

I'm going to Russia, and am wondering what I should bring with me. I've already thought about bringing some Emergen-C packets, and I know Lunabar makes some packets that have vitamins in them. I was thinking about bringing some Clifbars....and some Sharkies(they're gummy sharks that have electrolytes in them. I love them.

Anyone have any tips/suggestions/advice? I know there will be cucumbers and tomatos available everywhere, but that's going to suck if all I end up eating is cucumbers, tomatos, Cliffbars and Sharkies. I guess it wouldn't be too bad though, it'll only be for 10 days, but still.

I'd like some advice!

Oh,and if anyone knows of some vegan restaurants too, that would be great. I'm going to Moscow, and St. Petersburg(I think), but definately Moscow.

Thanks in advance :)

Mobile Living ? :> Homeless Marathon - National Radio

After living in vehicles from the Summer of
1999, until the Fall of 2005, I can tell you
that parking in a community can have it's
problems. For all intensive purposes, the
"Vehicle Housed" are considered "homeless"
and treated as such, by law enforcement and
various communities.

Please forward and post this announcement:

The tenth annual "Homeless Marathon",
(a nationally broadcast radio show, hundreds of stations)
Will be broadcast February 20th & February 21st, 2007
For stations and toll free phone number, see
http://www.homelessnessmarathon.org/

You might want to tune in to that show .....

A general FYI -

The real problems that I had faced were
not from the neighbors where I had parked.
They loved me and have given me letters
of reference. Nope .... it was the "Drainbows"
that had started parking in the same neighborhood.

The Fire Department actually had to come
out and rinse down a sidewalk because you
could smell the stench of urine across the
street at the coffee shop. A group of
"Drainbows" had been parking and drinking
there for a week. So the community ended
up passing laws to make it a $500 fine
and 60 days in jail offense to "camp" for
three hours or more.

Having affordable (cheap) housing is one thing.
Making an "acceptable community" out of it is another.
In reference, please see:>

The Criminalization of Homelessness;
A Problem Becoming A Solution
(Violent crime reduced 90% with a "Tent City" in Richmond CA.)
http://www.angelfire.com/hi/soberskidrow/parkh.html
Or just Google "homeless criminalization homeland".

The following excerpt has reference material as active
links, at the above report:

Excerpt:

A mobile homeless community could "share crop" (hr2, hr3:) on public
land (to help off set costs too). Funding could be split with Emergency
Services and Homeland Security because a Mobile Community has the
"infrastructure" of the basic kitchen, showers and toilets (hr4, hr4b, hr4c)
to "serve the community in an emergency". The very basic's for this and
it's "self-governing structure are shown with Seattle's "Tent City" a mobile
homeless camp", Dignity Village (in Portland, Or hs1 ) and Justiceville
"Dome City" in LA (hs2).

Blessings,

The Toxic Reverend
aka Tom Krohmer
About myself:
(slanted) interview posted my rebuttal to the "slant", at

I found this great vegetarain deli in Houston, Texas. they have a large selection of raw foods and cooked vegetarain foods. They make a kale salad that is delicious it has a lemon garlic dressing on it. I also ate a veggi Burger it was juicy and I ate two of them because it was so good. Mark

Vegan Restaurants Recommendations in San Francisco

For 100% Vegan Restaurants in SF I highly recommend:

Herbivore (2 locations); (don't leave without a slice of Vegan Carrot Cake or German Chocolate Cake) $
Millenium; gourmet $$$
Greens; $$
Bok Choy; $

Gernally, in most cities there are a lot of Thai, Indian, Asian, and Italian dishes that are or can be made Vegan by speaking to the chef. The above restaurants are totally Vegan so you won't have to ask for anything to be modified. Happy Eating!

Hi guys,

We've had quite a few new members join recently, and I'd like to say thanks, and welcome to those people, and also a general 'hello, how are ya?' to everyone else!

So, those of you who have not yet posted, please tell us about your favourite veggie restaurant. It doesn't matter where it is, 'cos everywhere is somewhere new to somebody else (did that make sense? I know what I mean anyway!!)
Or, if you prefer, just post and say hi, after all, it's what I've just done!

Take care, and POST LOADS!!!!!!!

Near Hobart TAS Australia: Citrus Moon Cafe

Hi all! Brilliant concept for tribe; I have had mixed results in my travels, trying to find vegan / lacto-veg friendly options beyond salad!

Here's one that I can recall off the top of my head -- it's near Hobart, Tasmania -- if you are travelling on the Apple Isle, make sure to stop by for one of their homemade veggie burgers!

There are menu options for vegan, lacto-veg, ovo-lacto, and omnivore; is a great place for tofu scramble folks to meet up with the bacon-and-eggs folks for brunch.

The setting is great! The owners have done up the place in bold colors, with moon-y details wherever they can (e.g., beaded curtains and such). Has the "usual" cafe vibe of smallish to biggish tables (one or two people to eight or ten if you push tables together) and plenty of loaner reading materials. And there's an outdoor patio in the back if you'd like.

Hi everyone!

Thought I'd recommend Earth Cafe in Manchester, UK. It's fantastic - run by buddhists (it's in the basement of the Buddhist Centre); their spinach quiche, chocolate cake and banana latte is to die for.

Here's the website address: http://www.earthcafe.co.uk/

Thanks for joining, why not post something about yourself, and tell us about your favourite restaurant?

So, about me.
I'm 30 yrs old, have a wife and daughter, and live in the UK. I've been Vegan for 12 yrs, and was veggy for 4 years before that. My fave restaurant is in Middlesbrough (UK) and is called The Massala. It is an Indian restaurant, but they prepare our meals seperately to the others, and always from scratch. The best Veggy restaurant near here is Wild Ginger in Harrogate, but it's a long trek to get there just to eat!

Right then,

Your turn!

Bye 4 now,
Fuerteventura

The restaurant we found in Fuerteventura was called Gibsons, and is just off the main drag in Corralejo.
Caroline, the co-owner is a vegetarian, and her partner, Steve is the chef there. They aren't a veggy restaurant, but understand completely what is involved in being Vegan, and cater appropriately.
Before going, you can read about them on www.fuerteventura.com/gibsons and from there you can e-mail ahead with any special requirements, or just to make sure they are able to accomodate.

Hello!

Hi, and thanks for visiting.
This site was prompted into existence by several factors, the main one being, whenever I travel abroad, I find eating out a nightmare. I last visited Fuerteventura, and having spoken to a vegetarian out there, I and my family were guided towards a restaurant owned by a veggy and her partner who would be able to cater for us. This turned out to be a really great place, and we would have eaten there every night, had we known about it. Before going away, I researched Vegan restaurants, and came up with the usual (nothing!) and resigned myself to a week of sarnies!
So, given this experience, I thought it would be a good idea to set up a group where vegans can post info about suitable places to go, all around the world, making the Vegan travel experience that bit more satisfying.

When posting, please post with the name of the place you are writing about in the 'Subject' field, for quick reference.

Many thanks,

James.
Thanks again,

James.
